1/2” SQUARE SHANK SNAP RING GROOVE CUTTER KIT

This is a snap ring groove cutter kit for use with line boring equipment. This kit works with any brand of line boring set up that uses 1/2” square tool ports in the boring bars.

 

The tool works by placing a piece of 1/4 HSS that has been ground to the needed dimensions, into the 1/2 square tool holder. The bit is then locked into place with the small setscrew on the side. A spring is then placed in from the other end and then a set screw screwed in to apply pressure on the spring, to then pressure the cutter bit out to cut.

 

The tool holder is then placed in the bar and bar is moved into the bore and set to where the snap ring groove needs to be. Then lock the tool holder into the bar by tightening the bar setscrew with the cutter bit placed almost touching the bore. Then the small setscrew on the side is released (recommend removing it completely) and then the motor is started and the groove cutting begins.

 

After the groove is cut the set screw in the side is reinstalled to lock the cutter bit back to the tool holder. The tool holder is then released by the set screw in the boring bar so it can be slid back and then the bar moved out of the bore.

 

The kit comes with 3 different length tool holders (2” 2-3/4” 3-1/2”) this allows the kit to cut snap rings in bore from approx 2-1/2 to 6” in diameter (when using a 2” bar) and even larger when the toolholder is placed in an extended toolholder for your boring bar. The kit comes with 4 different strength springs to choose from. This is a little bit of trial and error the first use to find a combination that works good for the width of groove your cutting and the amount of pressure you place on the spring with the setscrew. The kit comes with (2) 1/4 Cobalt/HSS tool blanks that get cut down to approx 1” in length and then the end ground to the required dimensions for the groove your cutting. (See photo showing example of a bit that has been ground) Also in the kit is all the needed set screws along with extras and the needed hex key wrenches for those set screws.

 

The tool is very compact to work in very tight areas. The kit can cut grooves in bores smaller than 2-1/2” when used in a smaller bar such as a 1-3/4 or 1-1/2 bar that has 1/2” tool ports. You may just need to shortened the 2” tool holder some.

 

Kit comes in a small container to store all parts as seen in the photos.
